We certainly think so!

The northern safari circuit in Tanzania is the stuff of dreams, with Arusha as the launchpad for its legendary quartet of parks: Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti and Lake Manyara. One day you might be watching elephant amble between Tarangire’s baobabs; the next, spotting the Big Five inside the self-contained paradise of the Ngorongoro Crater. Then there’s the Serengeti itself: those endless, waving grasslands, best seen from the basket of a hot-air balloon at sunrise as wildebeest thunder across the plains and Lake Manyara with its flamingo fringed lake and tree-climbing lions (really!).

And just when you think you’ve had your fill of adventure, along comes Zanzibar with its spice-scented alleyways, carved wooden doors, and that blissfull rhythm of island life that makes you forget what day it is.

All you need to know about Zanzibar

After days of dawn game drives and wildlife tracking, Zanzibar’s sun-kissed shores feel like the most natural transition in the world. The picture-perfect beaches complete with waves the colour of the sky, are shoulder-sinkingly beautiful, and you’ll definitely want to spend quality time swimming, snorkelling, and kayaking to your heart’s content. And those sunset dhow cruises? They might be on every brochure, but they’re genuinely magical. There’s truly something about watching the sun dissolve into the horizon from the deck of a creaking wooden vessel that gets everyone a little misty-eyed.

For something more adventurous, the east coast around Paje is a kitesurfer’s paradise – endless coastline, shallow warm waters, and perfect trade winds. For underwater explorations, diving here is phenomenal year-round, with over 450 fish species calling the coral reefs home. Around Mnemba Island (where &Beyond has created something rather special), you’ll swim alongside Green and Hawksbill turtles while bottlenose dolphins play in the deeper waters.

But if you think Zanzibar is just about swapping safari boots for flip-flops (although that’s certainly part of the appeal!), you’re missing part of the appeal. Centuries of African, Arabic, and European influences have created something utterly unique and a feast for all the senses. Stone Town – that UNESCO World Heritage maze of cobblestone alleys and intricately carved doors – practically begs you to get lost for hours. Every corner reveals something new: spindly minarets piercing the skyline, the aroma of cardamom and cloves wafting from spice stalls, or the sound of call to prayer echoing off ancient walls. And the guided spice plantation tours are aromatic adventures that’ll have you understanding exactly why this island was once the heart of the East African spice trade.

For a different kind of wildlife encounter, Jozani Forest is home to endangered red colobus monkeys that are wonderfully curious about visitors. Conservation-minded travellers can also visit turtle sanctuaries like Mnarani for moving encounters with Hawksbill and Green turtles that are being rehabilitated for release, or head to seaweed farms where local women have built a thriving, eco-friendly industry. These are the kinds of authentic encounters that remind you travel is about connection as much as discovery.

Bush and beach: the logistics made simple

One of the joys of combining Tanzania and Zanzibar is just how easy it is. Multiple airlines — from Coastal Aviation to ZanAir — make the 75-minute hop from Arusha to Zanzibar, while direct flights from Serengeti, Ruaha and Nyerere airstrips mean you can skip the road transfers entirely. Book early during peak season, keep in mind the 15–20kg soft-bag limit, and remember that small bush planes sometimes dance to the weather’s tune.

If your safari finishes further west, you can also reach Zanzibar via Dar es Salaam on a quick and pleasant flight from the main airport.

Ideal trip duration

To properly savor both safari life and island time, you’ll need a minimum of 10 to 14 days. This allows for a balanced experience with at least four to five days in each destination. Anything shorter could feel rushed – and rushing defeats the entire purpose of this particular brand of escapism!

The best time to visit

Like much of East Africa, Tanzania plays by the rules of dry and rainy seasons. Each offers different advantages for a Tanzania and Zanzibar combination and the ‘best’ time really depends on what kind of experience speaks to your soul.

Dry Season (June to October): This is classic safari season, when the bush strips back to its essentials and animals congregate around shrinking water sources, making game viewing spectacular and frequent. Over in Zanzibar, you’ll enjoy gloriously sunny days and a perfect gentle breeze. The downside? Everyone else knows this is prime time too, so expect company and high prices.

Green Season (November to May): Don’t let the ‘rainy season’ label scare you off – those in the know often prefer this time of year when the bush is luscious and spectacular. Tanzania has two rainy periods: the dramatic ‘long rains’ from late March through to May, and the gentler ‘short rains’ from November to December. These typically arrive as afternoon thunderstorms that clear quickly, leaving behind landscapes so green they look like someone’s adjusted the saturation settings.

February and March is the time to see the Great Migration in the southern Serengeti. These months are calving season, an experience that’s both heart-stopping and surprisingly intimate.

Other perks include significantly lower prices, far fewer crowds, and the kind of authentic, unhurried experience that makes you feel like you’re discovering these places for the first time. While some Zanzibar activities might be rescheduled due to weather, there are still plenty of glorious sunny periods. Plus it’s the perfect excuse to dive deeper into Stone Town’s cultural treasures.

What to pack

Packing for both safari and beach requires some strategic thinking, especially considering those strict 15-20kg soft-bag limits on domestic flights. The good news? Almost every safari lodge and beach resort offers a laundry service, making packing light a dream.

For the bush: focus on lightweight, neutral-colored clothing in natural fabrics. Layers are also essential for those cool dawn game drives and warm midday temperatures. You’ll also need comfortable walking shoes for any bush walks, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and more camera memory cards than you think you’ll need.

For island life: think quick-drying clothing that work in humid coastal weather, swimwear, flowy dresses and shirts, and comfortable sandals for wandering Stone Town’s streets, and a light cover-up for dinners. Most importantly, don’t forget waterproof protection for your electronics – you’ll want to capture every moment of your stay, both above and below the waterline.

Adventurous honeymoons in Tanzania

The west is undoubtedly the hidden gem of Tanzania and combining Katavi National Park with the Mahale Mountains makes for the most adventurous of honeymoons in Tanzania. The two parks are much less well-known than those in the north and simply add to the feeling of being somewhere truly wild. And nowhere is that truer than on the golden-grass plains of Katavi, where animals certainly outnumber people and you won’t be able to turn your head without spotting a buffalo here, an elephant there and a lion over yonder. In the Mahale Mountains, your wildlife experiences will continue with the opportunity to trek with the chimps that inhabit the forests. But with a golden beach on your doorstep, rock pools to explore and dhow trips to be had, there’s plenty more to enjoy here too.

Among the remotest of Tanzania honeymoon destinations, in our eyes, there are only two options for honeymooners here. First up is Chada Katavi, a romantic hideaway stuffed with classic campaign furniture, crisp linens and hand-woven rugs under the shade of the tamarind trees. In the Mahale Mountains, it’s got to be Greystoke Mahale, one of our favourite lodges on the continent and positioned right where the chimp-filled forests meet the sparkling waters of Lake Tanganyika.

A wildlife honeymoon in Tanzania

Every year, the Great Migration takes place in Tanzania’s Serengeti. One of nature’s most awe-inspiring spectacles, over 1.7 million wildebeest thunder across the plains in search of water. It’s exciting, even euphoric at times, and following the hooved beasties is most certainly something to include on one of our Tanzania honeymoons.

Where to stay depends on what time of year you travel (read up on that here), but that’s the beauty – there’s always action in some part of the Serengeti so really, you’ll never miss out. Combining your wildebeest watching with some of the country’s northern parks is a real treat and Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater would be near the top of our lists. Both are diverse, beautiful and home to all the storybook characters you’d expect to find prowling the plains.

If you’re keen to get really into the action of the Great Migration, try a mobile camp in the Serengeti (Kimondo and Serengeti Under Canvas are two of our favourites). Otherwise there are plenty of permanent lodges to choose from: Dunia and Kiota in the central region are worth a look at. Chem Chem, on its own private concession outside Lake Manyara would be our choice here, and why not try Gibbs Farm in Ngorongoro, a stylish hideaway where a bit of R&R is all part of the parcel. Those newlyweds in search of more of an adventuremoon, we’ve got something for you too. If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-track, don’t-know-anyone-else-that’s-been-there, bragging-rights escape, let us introduce our ‘Wilds of Northern Kenya’ trip. Whilst you’ll still get to explore the safari wonderland that is the Masai Mara, you’ll also get a taste of a slightly more unexplored side of Kenya. Seekers of something ‘wild and remote’ need look no further than Matthew’s Range (also known as the Lenkiyio Hills) in the north of the country. Just because we’re talking top Kenya honeymoons, it doesn’t mean you can’t do a little country-hopping and see a bit more. Our Mara to Mahe trip is perfect for those that want to combine some of Kenya’s magnificent wildlife highlights with the unparalleled beaches of the Seychelles. What to do?

You might think that because Mafia island and Pemba island are so small, they offer nothing more than lazy beach days… But whilst you can certainly get your fill of those here, these havens are more than just somewhere to top up your tan. Both Mafia and Pemba are world renowned dive spots and divers come here from far and wide in search of pristine reefs, crystal-clear waters and an abundance of incredible sea life.

Pemba is probably the most famous of the two when it comes to diving. The west coast is known for its steep drop offs and coral reefs, making it a veritable playground to spot tropical schools of fish. As well as observing Nemo and his friends, you can expect to dive alongside napoleon wrasse, barracuda, reef sharks, spotted eagle rays and always spectacular pods of dolphin.

Mafia is also famous for out-of-this-world diving and the sheltered bays and challenging dive walls are home to similar marine life to Pemba. There is one special thing, however, that might just help Mafia pip its neighbouring island to the post: between October and March each year, visitors are able to snorkel with one of the most beautiful creatures in the ocean, the whale shark. The island is recognised by PADI as being one of the top ten spots in the world to interact with these incredible beasts, which also happen to be the world’s biggest fish.

Whilst Pemba might not be home to these graceful giants, don’t write it off just yet. It’s also known as ‘The Green Island’ as a result of it’s lush and vivid interior. Take a wander and you might encounter vervet monkeys and flying foxes, or wander around the local plantations growing everything from cloves (the smell permeates the air), to mangos, coconuts and bananas.
The reality is, you can’t go wrong with either island. Both are perfect for beachy escapes and watery adventures and are truly idyllic destinations.

Reese Witherspoon said ‘I fell head over heels for Daisy and devoured this in a day’. It’s even been picked up by Amazon for a series deal with Witherspoon producing so make sure you get ahead of everyone else and read it asap!

Marlon James has already proved his literary chops with his Man Booker Prize-winning A Brief History of Seven Killings (about the attempted assassination of Bob Marley) and this new novel already has critics excited. The first of a three part series, Black Leopard, Red Wolf is set in a fictional African world and has been described as a cross between Black Panther and Game of Thrones – a pretty strong start then! It follows the journey of Tracker, a hunter who joins a pack of mercenaries in search of a lost child. Based on African myth and folklore and woven together by James’ competent hands, this is one we can’t wait to get stuck into.

The Testaments

Margaret Atwood fans have no doubt already marked September in their diaries, as they countdown to the release of the long-awaited sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments. Atwood hasn’t given much away yet but we do know that the story picks up 15 years into the future as we learn the fate of the fictional Republic of Gilead. There’s still a few months to wait, so why not buff up on the first novel or perhaps even the hugely popular TV show of the same name in the meantime?

A debut novel next, and one that was met with some serious acclaim. Set in Nigeria’s Lagos, My Sister, The Serial Killer is a tempting mix of wickedly dark humour and every day tragedy. It might not be a new release, but when This is Going to Hurt came out in 2018 it was an overnight success and to this day, has sold over one million copies in the UK alone! If that doesn’t tell you it’s a good read… The memoir follows the trials and tribulations of ex-doctor Adam Kay as he cuts his teeth in the NHS. Wickedly funny and at times heartbreakingly sad, Kay spares no detail of his time as a junior doctor. You feel exhausted as you read about his 97-hour weeks, jubilant as he documents his successes and devastated at the losses he encounters. Atonement, On Chesil Beach, Nutshell… Our next author needs no introduction and Ian McEwan’s new book sounds just as gripping as his others. Machines Like Me takes us back to a reimagined 1980’s Britain – Argentina has won the Falklands War, Thatcher battles Tony Benn for power and Alan Turing (famous for breaking the Enigma Code) is still alive and has made a major break-through in the field of Artificial Intelligence. The novel follows a couple who have bought one of the first commercially available robots and uncovers how they develop his personality and the effect it ultimately has upon their relationship. It’s a provocative tale that seeks to make us question: what is it that makes us human?

City of Girls

Elizabeth Gilbert

If you like your holiday reads heavy on romance and set in a glamorous past, City of Girls will be just the ticket. It might be written by Elizabeth Gilbert of Eat, Pray, Love fame, but it’s a world away from pizza eating in Italy and Indian yoga retreats. The novel is written from the perspective of a 95-year-old woman reminiscing on her heyday in the theatre world of 1940s New York (we said it was different!), looking back with a mixture of pleasure and regret. A heady combination of scandal, promiscuity and fun, this book promises to be unputdownable.

Another runaway hit from 2018 that we couldn’t bear to leave off our list. Hot on the feet of her 2017 debut, Conversations with Friends, Sally Rooney’s Normal People took the literary world by storm. Set in Ireland, it follows the relationship between Connell and Marianne, one the star of the school football team, the other a fiercely private bookworm. The novel explores the subtleties of class, the electricity of first love, and the complex entanglements of family and friendship. With themes that can strike a chord with almost anyone, it’s no wonder Normal People was an immediate hit.

Swan Song

Kelleigh Greenberg-Jephcott

Another for those who can’t resist a novel packed with drama, scandal and glamour, Swan Song is a sweeping story that focuses on the social downfall (and the true tale) of acclaimed author, Truman Capote. In her debut title, Kelleigh Greenberg-Jephcott seamlessly flits through time, exploring Capote’s childhood, his fame, his rise to the echelons of 1950s and 1960s New York high society and his meteoric and self-inflicted fall. The characters and stories are real, although no doubt embellished, bringing a sense of history and glamour to this riveting tale.

Even better, the turquoise waters are edged with crisp, white sand and you’d be forgiven for forgetting you’re actually in the middle of the continent! No one will ask anything of you here and it’s the perfect spot to spend your days, book in hand. And, if you happen to be reading a fast-paced thriller and find yourself inspired to try something adventurous, the water activities are excellent and there are plenty of mango-strewn forests begging to be explored.

Where to go on an Africa safari trip

When to go

Always the golden question when you plan an Africa safari trip! Just like anywhere on the planet, every country in Africa has different seasons and weather patterns that in turn have their own quirks and charms. There’s no ‘bad’ time to visit but depending on your safari-style, there might be a time of year that suits you better. June to October across much of sub-Saharan Africa is considered the ‘best’ for a safari. It’s the dry season and the weather is dreamy (but getting hot towards October) and the animals congregate around water making them easy to spot. The rains tend to fall from November to April in most countries (East Africa has a reprieve over December & January – hello, Christmas celebrations!), but it certainly doesn’t rain all day every day and the scenery is simply beautiful. January to March is also an excellent time to combine a Cape Town city break with a safari in the Kruger.

What to experience

Many Africa safari trips involve exciting game drives but the continent really does have experiences to tickle everyone’s fancy. Most camps in wildlife areas will offer game drives in 4x4s which are excellent way to get to grips with the area – and spot your first four-legged creatures. Then there are walking safaris, a wonderful way to get up close and personal to the wildlife, and boat, canoe and mokoro safaris that will take you to places vehicles simply can’t get to. The best beaches to add on to a safari

After a week of sunrise mornings and wildlife watching on a bona fide Africa safari trip, some chill-out time by the cool waters of the Indian Ocean might be just the ticket. Lucky then that there are so many options to choose from, no matter what part of the continent you find yourself in! In East Africa, Kenya and Tanzania both have picture-perfect coastlines and islands that make flying and flopping a dream. The exotic island of Zanzibar is probably one of the easiest to get to, but Mafia and Pemba islands are Robinson Crusoe-esque paradises (with not a tourist in sight!) that beg to be discovered. Don’t forget the Kenya coast either – with numerous daily flights from Nairobi, places like Diani Beach, Watamu and Lamu are very accessible. In southern Africa, the big players are Mozambique, Mauritius and the Seychelles. Where to stay

Accommodation in Africa is as varied as the landscapes that you’ll be gazing at from under your duvet! Generally speaking, lodges tend to be larger structures with more facilities – swimming pools, spas, a restaurant or two – whereas camps are smaller, usually tented, and perhaps don’t have quite as many frills. Bush camps are the most intimate of all (some as small as three rooms!) or you could go one step further and take a bed roll and a mosquito net (and an experienced guide!) and spend a night sleeping under the stars. If that sounds good, you might also enjoy a mobile safari or a mobile camp – structures that move to the best positions for wildlife at certain times of year. How to get there

Getting to Africa really is as easy as pie. Most airlines fly to at least one or two destinations on the continent from a good selection of major European airports and if you’re coming from the States, it’s simply a matter of connecting through. The airport hubs on the continent are Nairobi (for East Africa) and Johannesburg (for southern Africa) and from there, you can easily pop up to the country you’re visiting. As with most long-haul trips, booking further advance will hopefully save you some pennies, but keep your eyes peeled for last-minute deals too. When you get your Africa safari trip underway, the most common way to get around is by bush plane – tiny little aircrafts that can get right into the heart of where the wild things are. These planes are flown by expert pilots and all have the highest of safety ratings. Some countries lend themselves well to driving, but we highly recommend flying if you can – as well as being the quickest method of transport, you’ll remember the views of the landscapes below forever.

What does a safari cost? How can I save money?

The question we get asked most is how to make a safari more affordable. You’ve probably heard the stories about an Africa safari trip costing more than a year’s rent and swanky tents that are larger than a New York apartment; but a fabulous safari shouldn’t be about how much it costs. Firstly, choose your destination carefully – Botswana is always going to top the price charts, but countries like Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa can be wonderfully cost-effective. Don’t try and cram too many places into one trip either. Those little flights mount up and one or two stops can be just as rewarding as four or five. We’re also big fans of the special offer (who isn’t?!) and although they can be a little harder to find in the safari industry, they do exist. Think 5 nights for the price of 4, free flights if you travel with the same company, that sort of thing. Very lastly, think about the time of year you can travel and if you can avoid school holidays and other peak times, you’ll notice a big difference in price. That’s what we like to hear!

A typical day on safari

You might be surprised to hear that most lodges across Africa follow a similar routine during the day. In the morning, you’ll be woken as the sun rises (usually with a cup of tea delivered to your door – heaven!) before heading out on a game drive or walk. You couldn’t start an Africa safari trip any better way… At this time of day the temperature is cool, the animals are still active from the night before and it’s prime game viewing time. The activity will usually last for 3-4 hours, including a stop for a picnic breakfast or coffee and muffins. Back at the lodge, you’ll eat lunch and then it’s siesta time. Some lodges offer a short activity over siesta – perhaps a nature walk or a visit to a local school – but otherwise, the time is yours to do as you please: read, snooze or watch the wildlife stroll by. The afternoon kicks off with an African institution, Afternoon Tea, at around 3:30pm before you head back into the bush for your second activity (and a sundowner G&T!). In the evenings, dinner will usually be served at the lodge and you may have the chance of another game drive, this time in the dark and using a powerful spotlight to pick out the elusive nocturnal creatures. What an end to the day!

What to Pack: things to think about before you travel

Love it or loathe it, packing is an essential part of any Africa safari trip and believe us, there’s lots to think about. Your packing list will depend on the activities you’ve got lined up, but one important point to remember is that your luggage should fit comfortably into a soft-sided bag and be around the 15kg mark for those teeny-tiny planes. Essentials include plenty of layers in neutral colours (it’s a cliché, but you don’t want to be the only person wearing a red T-shirt!), comfy shoes, plenty of sun cream, sunglasses and a hat. In your hand luggage, pack all your camera equipment, spare batteries, important documentation (with copies) and medication. Little extras that will make you the envy of all your travellers include a warm jacket or jumper – it might be Africa but it gets cold in the mornings and evenings on those open-air safari vehicles – and a Kindle or iPad loaded with books for the ultimate siesta-time.

These days Nosy Boraha is a beautiful beach idyll; a place to while away your time laying on the sandy shores underneath gently swaying palm fronds, or snorkelling in the crystal clear waters. In the 17th and 18th centuries, however, it was a very different story and the island was home to more than a thousand pirates. It wasn’t the postcard beaches that drew the pirates to Nosy Boraha (although they certainly couldn’t have hurt) but it was no mere coincidence that the colony was set up on this seemingly remote island. This particular 50 kilometre stretch of land in the Indian Ocean was chosen specifically for its location. From here, the pirates could easily intercept and plunder the ships travelling from the East Indies, laden with valuable cargo. So associated was the island with piracy that ‘Gone to Madagascar for lymes’ was a message often left at pirate meeting places.

A home for rum-swigging marauders

It is believed that feared brigand Adam Baldridge was one of the first to discover the pirate potential of Nosy Boraha, then known as Ile St Marie or St Mary’s Island. Baldridge realised that the bays and inlets of the island would provide safety for ships, as well as affording a bountiful supply of fresh water, food…and women! It is also thought that the ample supplies of fruit were used for making the infamously favourite drink of these seafaring marauders, rum. Nosy Boraha was indeed a pirates playground and it’s no wonder that more and more buccaneers began to make their lives here.

Hunt for buried treasure

One of the most infamous characters to have walked the island’s shores was Scottish pirate, Captain William Kidd. Feared across the seven seas and even included in Robert Louis Stevenson’s literary epic, Kidd made quite a name for himself for plundering and piracy. Whilst Kidd was eventually executed on charges of murder and piracy on the high seas, his legend has lived on. Even now, 300 years later, treasure hunters are still searching for the cache of riches Kidd is rumoured to have buried, all across the world. There’s particular interest in Nosy Boraha as it is here that the infamous captain’s ship, Adventure Galley, is believed to have sunk. To this day, divers still explore the watery depths surrounding the island in the hope that they might discover the last buried treasure of Captain Kidd.

And it’s not just Kidd’s bounty that divers dream of finding in these Madagascan waters. The bay is an underwater paradise for treasure hunters and ships and sloops litter the ocean floor, holding the secrets of their old masters, concealing loot from centuries before.

Shiver me timbers, a pirate graveyard!

As more pirates started to settle on the island, a community was established. There isn’t much remaining from their occupancy today, though we do know there were previously many settlements and warehouses. One of the only reminders of Nosy Boraha’s once unsavoury residents is its pirate graveyard, the only one of its kind in the world. In this crumbling cemetery, set atop a hill, around 30 graves still remain, some even etched with an ominous skull and crossbones. Local legend states that William Kidd is buried here, in an upright grave, an eternal punishment for his despicable deeds in life. He was actually buried in England following his execution but sometimes it’s fun to be swept along with the bloodthirsty, island folklore…

A pirate’s life for you?

Nowadays the activities you can enjoy on Nosy Boraha are a little removed from those of its plundering pioneers, but no less fun! From July to September, travellers can enjoy dazzling acrobatic displays from the island’s annual humpback whale visitors, as the majestic creatures frolic in the surrounding waters. It’s also a ripe location for adventurers; hikers will enjoy trekking through the undergrowth of its steep hills (perhaps still concealing some pirate secrets!), whilst divers will revel in the crystal clear waters as they explore the island’s tropical reefs.

If you’ve been looking to plan your own swashbuckling adventure, then shoot Nosy Boraha right to the top of your list. Whilst we don’t encourage you to terrorise any passing ships, we do heartily recommend indulging in some other pirate pastimes; there’s local rum to be enjoyed, sea shanties to be sung and long-hidden secrets to be discovered.
